The Power of Prayer

During this uncertain time, it can be difficult to stay positive, especially as the news is ever-changing. But it is during times like these where how we react to a situation is just as important as ever.

"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change"

We cannot change the fact that COVID-19 exists. We cannot change the fact that far too many people all over the world have died from it. There are a lot of things we cannot change but nevertheless must learn to gracefully accept it. In order to see an end to this pandemic, we must resign ourselves to the fact that some things are beyond our control. We must learn to let go with the ease of an exhale.

"Courage to change the things I can"

The coronavirus has forced us to change the way we live and re-imagine the way we get thigns done. We wear masks and hand sanitizer like it's armor. We stock up on soap, toilet paper and food like it's the end of the world. And while this whole environment can feel pretty apocalyptic at times, it is with the knowledge of saving others that we must do what we do. We may not have a cure yet, but if changing our lifestyle helps slow the spread of the virus and saves lives, then we must learn to do so gracefully. Change is difficult, especially on a scale so large and so personal. Nevertheless, we must learn to take a deep breath and be willing to change what we can.

"And wisdom to know the difference"

It can be just as difficult trying to differentiate what classifies as something we can't change and what we can. This is where we must pray for guidance, not just for ourselves, but for others. Some of us live in fear of the virus; others of us in disbelief of its existence and impact. Our emotions dictate how we react. We need to pray for the wisdom to know when to take a stand and when to step back, and the wisdom to examine why we may feel the need to take a stand or step back. If our motivations are fueled by selfish desires, it is most definitely worth re-examining our personal biases and emotions. It may be difficult to reflect deep into ourselves, but the wisdom to accept what we cannot change and the wisdom to change the things we can makes all the difference. Once we open ourselves to that kind of wisdom, our choices will become as seamless and effortless as breathing.

While we may be apart in distance, we have the power of prayer to keep us close. We must focus our thoughts and energies on helping those around us and keeping each other safe, however that may look like.

To help you all get through this difficult time, we have put together a virtual prayer package with videos, daily prayers, and affirmations. We encourage you to take the time to reflect on these prayers and share with your loved ones. On behalf of Habitat for Humanity of Orange County, please stay safe.
